YEARs 9-10

Year 9 and 10 students are sorted into year group, mixed ability classes.

In Year 9 and 10 students work towards the Wairoa College Achievement Incentive (WAI) Certificate. WAI is designed to motivate students towards achieving their best, to monitor a student’s progress towards meeting the expected curriculum levels and to assimilate what is expected of students for NCEA.

Timetables are composed of the core subjects Mathematics, English, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Health. The remainder of the timetable is made up of selections of courses from Technology, Art, and Music.

In Years 9 and 10 students are encouraged to study a wide range of subjects to keep a large number of options open to them in the senior school. The curriculum is kept deliberately broad so that they do not specialise too early.

A Year 9/10 bilingual class is also offered for those students who wish to continue studying primarily in Te Reo Māori.

Students will work with their Parents/Caregivers and Academic House Leaders to finalise their course.
Which subjects should I study?

Year 9 and 10 students have options of non-core subjects throughout the year to give them a try at everything. In Year 10, students can begin to make choices.

To choose your subject options you need to think about these things:

Interests - What do you enjoy? You are more likely to work hard and do well in a course that interests you.

Skills and abilities - Which subjects are you good at? Discuss this with your parents and teachers.

Learning style - Do you prefer
  • reading and writing
  • listening and discussing
  • practical work
  • creative work.

Career choices - Research the subjects required or recommended for career areas you are interested in.
